Return to Sketch Daily

I’ve recently been hanging around over at Sketch Daily’s reddit page and was reminded how much fun it is. Especially the camaraderie amongst the humans – everyone is very supportive. I’ve been thinking about starting an in-person drawing group, but with COVID still hanging around, that can’t happened just yet. So Sketch Daily is the next best thing for now. I plan on keeping my drawings very sketchy though, since I already have the 100 Digital Heads Challenge going on as well as a few other design projects and, well, Christmas.

So without further ado, here’s today’s drawing, prompt: Spaceballs.

I love 50s style!

I pinned a bunch of 50s and 40s reference photos on Pinterest the other day and I can’t wait to sketch them all. I love the style, especially the hair! I did this one in pencil but I think I’m going to try to do most of these in ink and marker so I can get some ink practice for Inktober. Expect more of these in the next few weeks. 🙂

Sketch Daily: Figure Drawing

For today’s prompt I did a half hour class on sketchdaily.net, Sketch Daily’s reference site. The class starts with 30 second poses, then moves on to 1 minute poses, then a few 5 minute poses and ends with a 10 minute pose. I was really happy with how loose I was able to keep my drawings. I think I’m going to start doing this class every week – maybe for Free Draw Fridays.

5 A DAY: Figures 6-10

I started a new daily practice where I sketch 5 figures or 5 portraits in pen. I’m trying to improve my skills with drawing people, but also trying to learn to loosen up. My sketching skills have always been a bit weak because I have a habit of wanting to jump straight to a “perfect” finished piece. But I’m realizing through my own sketching and through viewing other people’s work, that loosening up really adds life to a drawing. Like in number one, you can almost feel her dancing on the page! I won’t be posting all of these because I don’t want to put “posting pressure” on them. But when they turn out nice, I’ll be sure to share.

I also wanted to say thank you to all of you who have been following my blog. I really appreciate the time you spend each day viewing my work. It means a lot to me. <3

Sketch Daily: Free Draw Friday

I’ve been trying to focus on portraits and figures as much as possible lately. It’s what I enjoy drawing the most and the only way I’ll get better is with constant practice.

This week I drew Sheriff Jack Carter (Colin Ferguson) from Eureka. I miss that show so much and wish they’d bring it back.

 

I also started a daily practice of sketching either 5 figures or 5 portraits in pen. These are my first two pages from the last couple days.

 

Today I drew a Reddit Gets Drawn photo. I absolutely love this image and wish I would have executed my version a little better. I’m definitely going to attempt this one again sometime and see if I can improve it.

Anatomy Challenge: 2 Minute Gesture Sketching, Day 1

During Inktober I was part of a group artists that got together to help & encourage each other. I think it was an integral piece of why I was able to complete my first Inktober successfully. It really helps to have others to hash out ideas and be a shoulder to lean on when things don’t go quite well. Some of us wanted to continue the group so we got together on Discord to exchange ideas, give feedback, create challenges, etc. We use the hashtag #redditartpals on Instagram. I love our mini community and find the constructive feedback very helpful, since my own perspective of my work can overly critical most of the time.

This week we are doing a one week anatomy challenge of gestural sketching. For Day One I decided to do very basic 2 minute sketches. The very last sketch I refined a bit more – spent about 5 minutes.
