The Dump Tree

When I was about 3 or 4 my parents didn’t have much. It was Christmas time, but they didn’t have the money to get a tree, so my Dad took me to go look for a tree we could cut down ourselves. We searched for quite a while, but with no luck. When we were about to give up, we came across a dumping area where people tossed out junk & trash – it was an assortment of unwanted stuff. And there it was, the Dump Tree. Laying on the top of the pile was a perfectly good tree – it just had a very crooked trunk. It looked as though someone had cut it down, but then abandoned it when they discovered the crooked trunk and figured it was more work than it was worth. My Dad scooped up the tree and put it in the van and off we went, singing Christmas carols on the way home. When we got home my dad sawed off the crooked part of the trunk, got it in the stand and it stood proudly in our living room. My Mom and I strung popcorn and made a ring chains out of construction paper and we decorated our little, dumpy, gem.

We may not have had much that Christmas, but we made a heartwarming memory that I will carry for the rest of my life.
