52 Weeks of Watercolor Challenge, Week 4: Weather, Stormy Seas

by | Aug 29, 2018 | painting, watercolor | 5 comments

My last Puddle Jumper piece for this week’s challenge didn’t really focus on weather, so I decided to try again. I didn’t use a reference for this painting so it lacks detail, but the colors turned out how I imagined them.

I’m still learning so I don’t really know what I’m doing. But I find watching YouTube videos of other painters very helpful. I almost always use reference photos too because it helps to try to replicate what I see as opposed to making it up in my head. For example, lighting will always be correct in a reference image, so if you can replicate the light & shadows, you’re halfway there. But if I had to give one tip it would be watch other painters – I’ve learned the most that way.

hey thanks! i’m also learning! and I totally agree with light and shadow. So far I found that layers of watercolor is super important and waiting for it to dry before coats. Thank you again

Waiting for the paint to dry is the hardest part for me! But it’s teaching me patience and to slow down and enjoy the process. Watercolor is an excellent teacher. 🙂
