52 Weeks of Watercolor Challenge, Week 3: Plants

This week’s theme was pretty broad, but I knew immediately that I wanted to paint the Swiss chard from my garden, because it is so bright and colorful. I struggled with this painting for two reasons. First, there was a lot of color layering in the green and I had to wait for it to dry in between. It was very eye opening to see what little patience I have for this. I was actually shouting at my painting at one point, “OH MY GOD DRY ALREADY!!!” I ended up having to put it away and come back to it later because I had places to be. Walking away from things mid-project is extremely difficult for me, which also seems to tie into my impatience. It’s like I want to get it done as soon as I sit down. Just like I want to be perfect at stuff on my first try. Maybe I should try meditating before I start (or during while stuff dries). Either way I need to keep at this until I find a way to relax and enjoy the process.

The second thing I struggled with is technique. Layering the colors right to look like there were shadows and not letting the red & green mix and get muddy was difficult. Today is the first day of this week’s challenge so I think I am going to attempt this painting again and see if I can get some better results a second time around. I think I’ll check YouTube for some tutorials too.
